How much does a book project cost?
Book costs are determined by a variety of components. During your initial consultation, we will listen to your vision for the project and your ideas, as well as any budgetary concerns. There are two parts to a Modern Tomes book budget. Part one includes the fee for interviewing, transcription, draft writing and layout. Part two includes all aspects of the physical production of the book (printing, binding, shipping), as well as reimbursement for travel expenses, if applicable. Our projects have ranged from $500 to $15,000 and we feel confident we can produce the perfect book for you at a price point with which you are comfortable. Because we do not use a template for our projects, we are able to craft, both, a budget that meets your needs, and a book that you will treasure forever.

How long does it take to produce a Modern Tomes book?
Books can take anywhere from two weeks to three months from start to finish. During your initial consultation, we will tailor-make a time line that meets your needs. We complete each component of the project in-house, except for printing and binding. This allows us to strictly adhere to deadlines and monitor progress. And, as work progresses, we will provide you with updates.

How much time and work is required of me?
As much or as little as you would like. At our initial consultation, we’ll ask you about your level of involvement. Depending on the project, we may need to interview you, or need you to assist us in arranging interviews and/or access to people, places or things (photographs, memorabilia). We have had success collaborating with clients each step of the way, as well as with clients who have not been in a position to give time to the project, for one reason or another. Your time commitment is up to you!

Who will hear my interview tapes? Who will read my book?
That’s up to you. We are in the business of producing the perfect book for you. We write the story that you want told in a way that you feel comfortable. Because we do not outsource transcription, nobody other than Modern Tomes will hear your interview tapes. And, because you see drafts of all content each step of the way, there are no surprises. We are happy to draft a standard non-disclosure agreement prior to beginning any project, and we do not ever share work (on the web or in print) without your permission.

Do you travel?
Yes, we do. We'll go anywhere in the world.
